Blind on one side, the boys trust the ship’s vision as they make deliveries. Destinations sometimes familiar and sometimes new bring both daily bread and the threat of capsizing. Why does the boat have but one eye? What does it watch? Who guards the children who ply down the river banks for the trade? Do they revel in the adventure, imagining themselves as pirates and their small craft a grand sailing ship? Or do they sift through tempestuous toil dreamlessly? We expect a bit of both.
